Lake Huay Tung Tao is also known as "Chiang Mai Beach". The lake is actually a giant man made reservoir located in a provincial park. The cost of entry is a minimal 20THB (less than 1USD). The lake is quiet during the week, however it becomes crowded on the weekend as locals enjoy the swimming and boating on the lake. Location
Lake Huay Tung Tao is located approximately 12KM from the city center of Chiang
Mai. To get there from the city, you would drive north on the canal road towards Mae Rim, passing the 700 year stadium. There will be a sign
to turn left off the canal road approximately 2KM past the 700 year stadium, follow the sign to the security gate, where you will be charged
a 20THB fee. Continue through the gate to the lake just a few hundred meters. There is a map attached to this article for your convenience.
Restaurants
It seems that wherever you travel in Thailand, there will always be food
for sale. Thai people love eating and drinking about as much as they like relaxing. There are several bamboo huts along the lake shore that belong to a local restaurant serving Thai food and drinks. Most of the customers are Thai, so the prices at these restaurants will be very low.
You should always check the language on the menu, and be wary of any menu that has English only. If a menu is only written in English, you can bet that there is a separate menu in Thai language with everything at half the price. Normally if you let the staff know that you are wise to this trick, they will allow you to order off the Thai menu. The most common dishes at these restaurants will be Thai Style B.B.Q. chicken and
pork, papaya salads and spicy minced meat salads. These are great snack
foods that go well with cold beer.
Off Road To Doi Suthep
There is an off road trail used by mountain bikes and off road vehicles that leads from Lake Huay Tung Tao to the Doi Suthep Temple. It is not recommended to try this route in a car or on a normal motorbike. There are adventure tour groups that organize day trips between the Huay Tung Tao lake and the Temple at Doi Suthep. The drive will take you from the lake to the bottom of the mountain which is in the area of Suthep - Pui National Park, with a stop at the Hmong hill tribe village for lunch.
Photography
All the photos and video of the lake and surrounding area that you see in this article are taken by "Heli-Asia",
using their remote controlled helicopter with remote camera mount.
The helicopter travelled to over 120 meters above the lake and hovered there using a sophisticated flight control system
that allows the helicopter to remain at the same altitude for a long period of time. The camera mount is controlled remotely from the ground,
and there is a live video feed showing the viewer of the camera. It takes 2 experienced technicians to operate the helicopter and the camera. Using a series of still photos taken at various different angles, Heli-Asia also created a spherical image of the lake and surrounding area.
